There is a captivating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is not legal. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect spot, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are allegedly required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is real of most borders.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel compound that contains many amenities aside from the gambling hall, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight gaming tables.
