Cambodia Gambling Dens

[ English ]

There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino wagering is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally small location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 17:00, and although visas are for all intents and purposes needed to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many borders.

The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, features 150 slot machine games and sixty tables. The Naga casino is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel building that features many comforts in addition to the casino, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and eighty eight gaming tables.
